Formal learning

Formal learning refers to structured and planned instruction, typically conducted in institutions such as schools, universities, vocational schools or training centres. In companies and organizations, it is usually managed through LMSs (Learning Management Systems) and LXPs (Learning Experience Platforms) as classroom training, digital learning or blended learning.

This type of learning is characterised by clearly defined objectives, specific curricula and formal evaluation of whether learners have achieved the expected learning outcomes. The approach aligns with push-learning, as content is “pushed” to the learner.

Formal learning is:

  • Structured
Content and activities are carefully planned and follow a predetermined study/learning plan.
  • Institution-based
Often takes place physically in classrooms or training rooms, or virtually via webinars.
  • Instructor-led
A teacher or trainer guides the learning process.
  • Evaluated
Learning progress is measured through exams, tests or certifications.
