The Barrier Model

The Barrier Model, as applied in Blendit Learning, is partly inspired by the work of Cathy Moore.

Although she does not formally use the term Barrier Model, her concept of action mapping focuses on identifying and removing the barriers that prevent people from achieving their (learning) goals.

This approach helps learning and change consultants analyze the actions people need to perform to achieve a specific outcome, and then design training that targets those actions – rather than overwhelming learners with unnecessary information.

The model begins with a description of the business need being addressed and what learners require in order to overcome the barriers they face.

The Barrier Model is then used to ask the question:

“What is really preventing learners from doing what we want them to do?”

It typically operates across four areas:

  • Knowledge
  • Skills
  • Environment
  • Motivation

Once we have identified what is truly preventing learners from doing what we want them to do, we can then design the right learning solution to enable them to succeed.
