The ADKAR model is a change management framework that outlines five steps individuals must go through to successfully implement a change:
Awareness
- Create awareness of the need for and purpose of the change
Desire
- Involve employees so they become engaged and motivated to support the change
Knowledge
- Provide the necessary knowledge about what needs to change as part of the transformation
Ability
- Equip individuals with the skills and capabilities required to implement the change
Reinforcement
- Sustain the change over time through ongoing initiatives and reinforcement

The model is used to identify barriers to change and to guide both individuals and organizations through the change process.
